2019 Open Triples – Saturday 13th April
The day was gloriously sunny, but with a bitterly cold wind. 9 teams assembled, fortified with tea/coffee and bacon butties with the odd welsh cake (for an energy boost of course!). We were very pleased to be supported by a team from Monkstone – Sean, Roger & Peter; a mixed team - Shun, Linda, Vince & Leah; and a team from Caerleon Rugby Club – Dai, Wally & Mike. The other 6 teams were all made up from club members – it was good to see such a fine turnout.
The three morning games ended with 2 teams on 3 wins – Steve, Jill & Roger (+18) and Dai, Wally & Mike from the Rugby Club (+13), and 4 teams with 2 wins. Colin had made some tasty and warming Butternut Squash & Red Pepper soup as well as beefburgers and hot dogs, Marje rustled up some ham and cheese rolls, and there was also some delicious cake that Gail made.
The afternoon took its toll on some teams, who were grateful for the bye to give them a win! However there were some good games between the Rugby Club and Paul, Alan & Colin and also Pat, Gail and Ray Lewis put up a good fight against Steve, Jill & Roger.
However, the dark horses proved to be Basil, Ray Williams & Jackie who, after losing their opening game to Paul, Alan & Colin by the narrowest of margins 9-10, went on to win all of their remaining games, including a 13-4 defeat of Steve, Jill & Roger, to become the 2019 Open Triples Champions, with 5 wins and a points difference of +27. Two other teams also finished with 5 wins: in second place were Dai, Wally and Mike with a score of +19 and in third place were Steve, Jill & Roger with +16.
2019 Henry's Day
15 people assembled for Henry's day, played over 5 rounds. it was won by Alan, who won every game, Gail was 2nd and Dai 3rd (each won 4 games)
2019 Club Doubles
The Club Doubles was postponed until October but 9 teams competed so again some teams had a bye. 2 teams won all six rounds; Jim and Linda had the better points difference (and didn't have a bye), Hugh and Matthew were runners up and Alan and Colin were 3rd with 5 wins.
2019 Club Singles
The 12 people playing the Club Singles were split into 2 groups and played a round robin in the morning. Actually there were 13 who turned up but Irene and Linda played as a team playing alternate games. Jim won group A with Simon runner-up and Linda/Irene won group B with ray as runner-up. After another splendid buffet lunch we had the semi-finals and the final, between Jim and Simon, was won by Jim.
